Kiel

In 1967 our first stop after leaving Australia was Kiel, to visit my mother. Among other things we noticed a lot of tall people there, and concluded that Kiel people are tall. After some days we found out that there was a convention hosted by Kiel, for tall people.

Kiel was strange in some ways, very staid people, many of them in camel hair overcoats, which seemed to be the fashion. At one point I wanted to catch a bus and asked a lady also waiting for a bus, how do I pay? She turned on me and said ``Aber das wissen Sie doch!'' ("But you know that!''). It seemed that she couldn't conceive of anyone not knowing that.

On one of our walks we were amused to see a sign mounted on a pole in the front yard of a house, announcing the owner as ``Professor Dr. Dr. (name, which I don't remember), Arzt und Zahnarzt'' (doctor and dentist). I thought this was funny and took a photo. As I did this, the man himself came out and invited us into the house. His wife and he, an elderly couple, were very proud of their house, especially the lounge, which was furnished in a Japanese style. Nice people, but I still thought the sign was funny in its ostentation.
